Battlefield 3 'Back to Karkand' DLC Maps Confirmed

DICE Community Manager, zh1nt0 confirmed today that four classic Battlefield maps will be included in the Back to Karkand DLC for Battlefield 3. Limited Edition copies of the game will get this content for free. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Wake Island, Strike at Karkand, Gulf of Oman och Sharqi Peninsula.

In together, these maps have over 25.000 years of playtime

----
Any chance we will see other bf2 maps converted to frostbite 2 as time goes on?

Also will the battlefield 2 guns featured in this expansion carry over to the main game or are they just for these 4 maps?

Can't comment on any of that at the moment. Sorry.

Battlefield 3 Producer Dissects The FPS Genre

Image

The first-person shooter has grown to become a dominant genre in modern gaming. With so many studios cranking out shooters, creating a unique identity has become increasingly difficult. When checking out Battlefield 3 in Sweden, we asked executive producer Patrick Bach if he had any thoughts about the current state of the first-person shooter genre. "It's all I think about," he said.

Check out the video link below to hear him talk about the roots and evolution of the genre.

War Tapes: The Sounds Of Battlefield 3

Image

The award-winning team behind Battlefield: Bad Company 2's terrific sound design is back. Led by audio director Stefan Strandberg, DICE got up close and personal with the sounds of battle during a live military exercise. Their recordings and subsequent lessons learned could make Battlefield 3 the most realistic sounding war experience in gaming.

Watch the video below to hear how DICE plans to make a great-sounding series even better.

French Magazine preview of game - summary

Image

Important things:

-when there's an explosion near you, your soldier is projected to the ground, and it apparetnly isn't scripted. when you get too much shots your soldier starts closing and opening his eyes(?) from the pain, and your visibility gets bad.

-the maps should be very varied(new york, paris, nocturn, desert, etc)

-frostibite 2.0 has been in devellopment since 2008. "PC Jeux" got surprised by the engine, it's kind of revolutionary, like the first engine from Crysis was back in 2007.

Some info in bulk:

The Frosbite 2.0 was already in development when the first Bad Company (released in June 2008) was still in production.

-When an explosion took place close to the player, it is projected on the ground (it seems that it is not scripted). When the player is shot so insistent, our character blink (?) And the view is cloudy.

-The basis of body awareness is the Mirror's Edge, which was subsequently improved. 3D animations come largely licenses FIFA and NBA Street.

-Environments should be varied: plains, woods, night scenery (not to mention Paris, New York and of course the Middle East)

-DICE wants to release a game where the player has the feeling of playing as a soldier, while alternating phases of intense fighting with other much quieter moments. A bit like FEAR 1 (and quite the opposite of Call of Duty)

The Technology Behind Battlefield 3

Image

Battlefield 3 is not a simple rehash. DICE has spent years building the new technology to ensure that the third entry in the series stands apart from the rest. In these three interviews, we speak with the team to learn how the new technology will affect each player's experience on the battlefield. Check out the first video to learn all about the greatly enhanced destructive capabilities of the Frostbite 2 engine.

Want to know how Mirror's Edge has influenced Battlefield 3? Lead animator Tobias Dahl talks about the company's increasing emphasis on animation and how the team is incorporating a system called ANT from EA Sports.

The third video features Battlefield 3 art director Gustav Tilleby explaining the new lighting system in the game and DICE's approach to creating environments.
